I partner closely with research teams to craft publications that make an impact on the scientific community. I think strategically, pay attention to details, and lead with kindness.

Science communication leadership

I bring a clear-eyed understanding of the complexities of science communication. When it comes to issues of style, grammar, and audience expectations, I guide teams towards choices that will help them achieve their goals.

Here’s what I bring to the table…

Scientific rigor

Ensure that study data and methods are accurate, complete, and reproducible.

Regulatory compliance

Craft publications that meet the highest editorial and reporting standards.

Mindset

I help research teams shift their mindset from scientific discovery to scientific communication.

Rethinking science communication

I have a vision for how science communication could be, how it could be better, more accessible, and a more effective catalyst for positive change.

Here is how I make a difference…

Calibrated

A lot of science communication is more complicated than it needs to be. I finely calibrate publications to be as accessible as possible without sacrificing rigor.

Message focused

I help research teams answer the question “so what?”, which is essential for crafting publications with impact.

Bringing Research to Life

I bring research to life by getting it on the page, in front of readers’ eyeballs, where it can spark imaginations and serve as an enduring record of your work.

Generative AI use philosophy

Generative AI is a powerful tool for professionals like myself to increase productivity and improve the consistency and quality of our work. When it comes to using AI, I follow a few key principals.

Transparency

It is important to be transparent about how generative AI is used to produce content. Many publishers, including most academic journals, require authors to provide a descriptive statement about they used AI. Some organizations have rules and limitations about how AI can be used. So, it is important to understand reporting requirements and use AI in an appropriate and transparent way.

Accountability

AI agents are not capable of taking accountability for the quality or veracity of the content they produce. It is essential that a human expert review, edit, and verify all content produced by generative AI. An AI agent can’t stand behind its work and take accountability for it’s quality, but I can.

Human Leadership

AI is a tool that requires a human user and human-leadership. I wouldn’t ask a colleague to do something for me without giving them all the materials and information they needed to be successful. The same is true when I prompt an AI agent to do something for me. Just like most of us, AI agents benefit from clear, detailed instructions and plenty of context.

AI agents also benefit from human oversight and editing. When a colleague gives me a document to look over, I don’t immediately assume it is perfect. I approach it with open-minded curiosity and a goal to leave it better than I found it. I bring the same attitude to content generated by an AI agent.

Good Judgement

There are plenty of things that AI does very well and plenty of things it struggles with. I use my best judgement when using AI to make sure that it’s the right tool for the job.

Watchfulness

AI has made remarkable progress in recent years and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. It is important to view AI as an evolving technology. I try to experiment with AI on a routine basis. I have found that a task it struggled with a year ago, It can do quite well today. So, I try to pay attention and be open to change.
